The Power of the Sense of Ownership

The power of the Sense of Ownership

A sense of ownership is a great personality trait that produces amazing results not only in a workplace, but in our society as a whole. A sense of ownership is not a skill that can be taught; it is an inner core value or a character of an individual to reach a pre-determined goal. It comes with a sense of protection because when we own something, we protect it. This blog will be a series of two parts: The first part will discuss the importance of the sense of ownership at a workplace and the second will discuss how citizens’ sense of ownership makes a great society.

At workplace

Great employees are not motivated by salaries only. They own their roles. This means that they put themselves in the shoes of the owners / company stakeholders as well as the clients / customers. They understand that companies are in business to make money and provide great values to customers.

They UNDERSTAND the policies and procedures and always find ways to meet or exceed expectations. They do not have to be asked to do something as they always take initiatives. They will challenge the status quo to effectively and efficiently achieve the company’s goals. They take directions well and don’t like to be micro-managed as they understand what is required from them.

They care: They understand that assisting other team members delivers great results to the company and they go the extra mile to give a helping hand. They are great teachers, problem solvers and innovators as they think outside the box. They are result-oriented and teach others to understand, not to memorize. When it comes to business, they mean business.

They value this character and cannot function in an environment that does not allow them to be who they are. They can either be the best performer or the worst performer in an environment they see hostile. There are usually very passionate about whatever they do, and do it well.

As a leader, how do you make sure that your team members have this valuable character as it cannot be taught? Here are some few steps:

1) It starts with the hiring process. Do not just focus on skills; explore the character of the applicant through situational questions for example.

2) Emphasize the value of the sense of ownership during the training process, clearly communicate the company goals and teach the process and procedures in an understandable way, whereas in a memorable way.

3) Allow employees to be solution-oriented within the company’s guidelines.

4) Encourage employees’ growth.

5) Value employees’ feedback or suggestions, even if their suggestions are not taken into consideration.

6) Reward them even if it is only a “thank you” note . We all know that a simple “thank you” goes a long way as it allows people to replicate their positive actions. Gratitude is key to success.

7) Finally, be a great leader that leads by example.
